Water, what is it good for?

Drinking enough water every day is crucial for many reasons: Organ function, prevention of infection, cellular nutrition, joint health and regulation of body temperature (1)

It is easy to neglect drinking our recommended daily intake even though it is vital during those hotter months. When we actively sweat in the warmer months, we find it easier to replace those fluids however, when we are just moving through day-to-day life, we may dehydrate without feeling thirsty or actively sweating.

On average it is recommended that women consume 8 glasses and men consume 10 glasses of water every day (3)

So how do we ensure our body is well hydrated without getting bored? Try these hydration hacks to stay on track this winter:

  • Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to add flavour to your water

  • Make up some frozen fruit ice cubes to add a hint of flavour to your water

  • Carry a water bottle with you when you are out

  • Try to have a glass of water with each meal and snack you consume throughout the day

  • Make a habit of having a drink of water as soon as you get out of bed (2)

Hydration can come from the food we consume as well as water. Fruit and vegetables contribute to hydration while adding fibre, vitamins and minerals. Add the following fruits and vegetables to your daily meals to improve hydration and overall wellbeing (4)

  • Celery, Cucumber, Lettuce, Spinach, Zucchini, carrots, broccoli, kale

  • Watermelon, peaches, oranges, strawberries, apples, pineapple
